A piano is normally a closed system: more than a thousand components must function together for it to remain a piano. Schrödinger’s piano opens that system completely.
The 1,327 components of an early 20th-century piano are dismantled, documented and displayed individually across rotating panels. Keys, hammers, dampers, strings, pedals and mechanisms become a mechanical inventory — an anatomical dissection of an object that normally operates as an indivisible whole.
On the reverse of the panels, handwritten chalk annotations connect the physical components with quantum mechanics, landscape, meteorological phenomena and the perception of time. One note considers the interval in which rain has already begun but we have not yet perceived it: the infinitesimal gap between an event and our awareness of it.
By opening the piano and giving space to each of its parts, the work transforms a closed functional system into an exposed field of relationships. Its rotating modular structure allows the work to be continuously reconfigured, shifting between object, diagram, archive and landscape.
