American Air

I began collecting airs shortly before the exhibition Air de... at ADN Galeria. The question appeared when I received an object bought online that had travelled protected by small cushions of air: where was the air inside actually from? The parcel could have a recognisable origin, but the air did not necessarily have to have been produced, inflated or sealed in the same place.

From there I began keeping fragments of bubble wrap, bags and inflated packaging from different places. Some I found myself; many others have been brought to me by friends, family, artists and people who knew about the project. Each sample contains air, but also a route, a relationship and a story of circulation.

For me, the collection works as a material cartography of globalisation. The first places are, logically, those closest to me; but territories with a strong presence in international production and sales networks —China, Japan, South Korea or the United States— quickly appear. The shape of the archive depends not only on geography: it depends on proximity, trade, logistics and on who can travel or make something reach me.

Project chapters

1. The question · before Air de...

The collection begins with an apparently absurd doubt: if an air cushion arrives from another country, does that air really belong to that place? The impossibility of answering absolutely turns provenance into a useful fiction and, at the same time, into a way of observing the invisible infrastructures of global trade.

2. Air de... · ADN Galeria, Barcelona, 2022

The first airs were presented in the exhibition Air de... at ADN Galeria. Samples were classified by provenance —country, shop, person or context— and placed inside Plexiglas urns. The exhibition opened on 26 November 2022 and brought together different investigations into air and its physical properties.

3. A collection arriving through other people

Over time, the project stopped depending only on my own movements. Many samples reach me because someone remembers the project when opening a parcel, travelling or receiving an object. The collection therefore grows through an informal network of people who transport air even though air is normally not what they intended to transport.

4. LMNO · Brussels, 2026

A diptych formed by American Air and Chinese Air was presented at LMNO in Brussels in 2026. The project remains active: each new sample can alter both the geographic distribution and the economic reading of the archive.

5. Una geografía económica, no solo geográfica

The map and the list form the same archive. Most entries are countries, with a smaller group of cities and regions that mark specific routes, encounters or logistical nodes. Filled points are airs already in the collection; open points are places I still want to incorporate.
